I Will Never Fail You

GETTING STARTED

Chapters 13 through 19 of Joshua provide details of how the land was divided between the twelve Israelite tribes.* We will cover these chapters in a way that is slightly different from the usual Time With God format. As you read the text, pay special attention to God’s promises that are fulfilled and aspects of God’s character that are revealed.

READ THE WORD: JOSHUA 13:1-7 (ESV)

13:1 Now Joshua was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to possess. This is the land that yet remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites (from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of the Avvim, in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of the Amorites, and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath, all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive them out from before the people of Israel. Only allot the land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

DIGGING DEEPER

  3. Which characteristic of God do you need right now in your life?
  4. Where are you seeing one of these aspects of God’s character present in your life right now?

RESPOND TO GOD

People will often fail us. Each one of us has scars from promises that have not been kept. However, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” (Numbers 23:19). In Joshua, the land is a land of promise, given by God to the patriarchs within the context of a covenant of grace. The people had their hope in this promise and it was actually happening, and was thus a deeply spiritual time for the Israelites. God’s character is unlike anything we have ever experienced. His faithfulness, his truthfulness, his compassion, his unending grace, all beyond measure.

  • Take a moment to thank God for who he is, and for the depths to he loves you.
  • Whether your hope is in things unseen, or yet to come, or whether you experience his answer/blessing now, praise him that he is always good and faithful, the same age to age.
